Speaking of grammatical quandaries, there's one I've been mulling over for a year and a half. I still haven't gotten a straight answer from anyone on it, and I was wondering if you guys could help at all.

Do I use "were" or "was" when describing a hypothetical situation (i.e. "if I were you...","if it was correct...", and the like)?
