Ever read "The Stand"? It's probably one of if not my most favorite book of all time. Very different from the typical King fare, and I really think it's his best work ever (although I will admit to not having read the Gunslinger books.)

Also, "The Eyes of the Dragon", which I believe actually has some connection to the Gunslinger books (as even "The Stand" does) is really good, too, and not your typical King fare. In fact, I believe it was written for his daughter, when he realized that he'd never written a single thing that he'd ever want her to read before she was an adult ;-)
