I've actually thought a lot about these things because I work A) in the entertainment industry, and B) in an office where the man in charge doesn't need to raise a finger to change a lightbulb. Here's what I've come up with. It won't salve your anger or ease your indignation, but it might get you thinking.
Issue one: Comes down to responsibility. A ditchdigger isn't responsible for anyone beyond himself and his shovel, at least in the workplace. If there is an accident or a mistake, it's the supervisor who is held responsible. Beyond the supervisor is the manager, who is responsible for getting the ditch dug at a price the ditch-needer is willing to pay and the ditch-digging company can accept and still make enough money to run. Above them, it's the executives, who are ultimately responsible for the ditch itself and any damage to anyone the ditch may cause by being dug wrong or just by being. It's not a matter of who works harder or works which part of themselves, their mind or their body. It's a matter of who, ultimately, will be blamed or praised, where, ultimately, the buck stops. We pay people a lot of money to shoulder responsibility.
Second Issue: Actors, athletes, etc. are different. They are special. The are, in effect, the only people who can do their specific jobs. Michael Jordan can jump higher than Koby Bryant, who can jump higher than some other nameless player, who can jump higher than the guy on the bench, who can jump higher than you and me. Laurence Olivier may not be the only one who can play the part, but he's the one the audience wants to see. He's the one whose name sells tickets. He can do it better than that guy in local theatre, who can do it better than you and me. We pay these people to be special. We pay them to bring their specialness to us. We pay them because we'd rather have no one else do that job. No one.
And that, my friends, is what I have come to believe. It helps me some.
