Just hook the scanner up (in all likelihood you'll plug the scanner cord into your PC's paralell port... if you've got a printer plugged in there already there should be another port on the scanner for it, of course if it's USB things are in theory easier). Next, open up your favorite image editor or whatever software came with the scanner (ooh, if you haven't installed the scanner drivers/software, do it now). Then, once inside your image editor, you'll likely go to File -> Acquire and from there you'll probably need to choose "TWAIN" or "TWAIN32" though it may vary. Then your scanner software should come into play and you'll go ahead and "PreScan" (unless it's a handheld), select the image area you want to scan, choose a reasonable resolution to scan at, and then presto! Now just pick a good image format and you're finished.
Wait! How could you forget the small chance of it being a SCSI scanner?!
