Cubicals

I hate cubicals. I spend most of my day in one, and even though I'm one of the lucky few to have an actual wall *and* a window, it's still a cubical. The other walls are still only five feet high, and only seem to block things like light and ventilation, while allowing things like background office noise and my neighbor's phone conversation with her husband to filter on through.
I just had the strangest cubical experience. The woman in the very next cubical actually called me on the phone. I didn't even need to listen through the earpiece to hear her--I just sat there and listened to her talk into her phone, three feet away. When I did put the phone to my ear, I got this weird stereo effect. It was even stranger than the times Sam and I would talk to each other over the computer while seated two terminals away from each other in the UNH clusters. At least then, we were using an alternate form of communication, and not just talking to each other through a mechanical object while sitting three feet from each other. Of course, you get a new understanding of things when you see someone type "*ROFL*" and then look up to see them not even smiling. :-)
