No, see, it was bread. OK, so, before it was sliced, there was this big dilemma on how to eat it. Some people crushed theirs, resulting in crumbs galore. Other people tore theirs which, especially if it was brötchen, resulted in crumbs galore. Others simply bit theirs from the loaf, which just looked wrong and relulted in sore, over-extended jaws. Somebody got the bright idea to slice the bread so it could be easily torn, bitten, or easily ground (if, of course, it's hard enough). Thus, it's not the bread that's so great, but the slicing.
