We have an ingrained instinct to survive. Only in very rare cases does any human ever take his/her own life, and in most all cases where it matters, we'll try our very very best to save our own skin. We might rationalize this as a fear of pain, or a fear of death, or any number of things. But what it comes down to is an instinct to survive.

I went through a period of time (inspired by the X-Files episode "The Field Where I Died", if you are familiar at all with X-Files) where I seriously considered the idea of reincarnation. I began reading books on it, and rationalizing it (badly) in my head. At that time that I was also experiencing a lot of anxiety due to the recent death of a loved one with whom who felt I felt a pressing desire to resolve some unpleasant issues.

Same sort of thing.
