I've never cottoned to this one. I try to live by a different ideal, namely 'Do unto others as they would have you do unto them'.

I find it most amusing that Shakespeare causes this to be said by a babbling fool.

What he was actually referring to is personal ideals; that one should hold to them. You'll recall the other half '... it follows, as the night must follow day, thou canst not then be false to any man'.

Unfortunately, this isn't true. Lots of people have personal ideals that allow them to cheat and steal and rob and kill.

This is one of my favorite Shakespeare quotes, actually.

Although he was referring to Science when he said 'your philosophy'.
