It is indeed just a simple level 1 shield, except that sorcerers and druids -- who cannot normally use shields because they have to keep their arms free -- can use it.

If you're levitating, you (1) don't get ambushed by monsters quite as often, because you can move about the labyrinth more quietly, and (2) you are immune to all (non-chest) traps except for the one where flames spurt from the walls.
