It's a winding but straightforward route to the boss. My guess is you mistook a door for a wall at some point; it's surprisingly easy to do.

The general path is to work your way north from the elevator, until you're just north of the big hunk of walls, then work east, and then work *north* again -- not south -- so that you wrap around the level boundaries and wind up on the east side of the hunk of walls.
