I'd like to do it all again with a few bucks in my pocket. That's really about all I would change. If I had been able to spend ten bucks a week, I could have had a real blast. A buck in 1950 was a lot more money than it is now.

> Notice that I said "best years of my youth." I've had some really great years since I was youthful. I taught school for 33 years, have been married for 53 years, have children and grand children, have traveled extensively and I have enjoyed a great life. I guess at my age you tend to look back a lot, but I am also looking forward to the funture. I still haven't been to Spain, haven't watched a space ship leave Cape Canaveral, and haven't driven across Texas.

You really can skip the drive across Texas.
Some friends and I drove from Minneapolis to Marshall, MN to Houston and back to Minneapolis one weekend a few years ago. The drive across Texas was just as long as the rest of the drive, and certainly no more interesting than driving lengthwise across Nebraska. It's just that instead of corn, you're looking at mile after mile of dust and tumbleweeds. Don't get me wrong, there are nice spots in Texas, and if the goal is just to say you did it, by all means go ahead, but if you're expecting to see a lot of great, wonderful, marvelous and interesting things, don't hold your breath.
