Try doing something else in the tower. You will probably have to do that something else at least several times in a row. I've had a few times where it took quite a few tries. And there was also a time or two that helping the gnome (I assume you meant the gnome when you said dwarf) took longer than usual.

By the way, please keep the hint requests on this board. There got to be so many hint requests in the earlier going that they were going to overwhelm all other discussions.

A lot of your other questions are answered in the sequel.
