Stuck in Outlaws

OK, I've tried all I can think of. Traded my button for the ring to the lady in the rooming house, then sold it for fifteen dollars, was that a mistake? Cause it seems like I have no further use for money since I can't get back in the poker game. I've already encountered every situation on the Hints Page, except that I haven't come across any desert. My inventory is: 26 dollars, Hannibal, my gun, matches, altar cloth, hat pin, feather, key, playing cards, cord (from upstairs in the saloon), beer, cabbage and spitoon.

It seems funny that I haven't heard anything about these outlaws I'm supposed to stop, after so much has happened in the game. Anyway, how do I get to the desert?
