If you haven't done a particular something first, then the east-west passage never ends. Go back the way you came in (I think it's west) as many steps as you went down the passage, and eventually you'll get out of the tunnel again.

Once you *have* done something to "unlock" this magic passage, then you should be able to get down it within something like...I forget, maybe six or seven turns? Something like that.
