The Uninvited (1944)

Reviews and Comments

Ray Milland stars in this exceptionally well-made, often overlooked ghost story. A brother and sister move into an abandoned house and are enthralled with it -- until it becomes evident the house is haunted. It all has something to do with a local woman (with whom Milland falls in love) who lived there as a child. The dialogue and cinematography are breathtaking in and of themselves. Exploiting the natural fear of the unseen, The Uninvited creates an unequaled atmosphere of mysteriousness, tragedy, and scares, and finishes with a wholly satisfying climax.
