For what this is -- a cinematic adaptation of an Ernest Hemingway novel -- this is very good, with fine performances by Gregory Peck, Susan Hayward, and Ava Gardner. However, I'm not personally very fond of Ernest Hemingway, and I don't hold this film in any higher regard. I rate it generously, but on its artistic merits alone. Hemingway fans will be well pleased.
