Ron Howard's film about a day behind the scenes at a newspaper publishing company is a curious mix of comedy and drama that comes off as a curious mix of satisfaction and annoyance. The production lacks consistency -- just when it's getting good, it gets bad, and vice versa. Still, the performances are superb, and the "showdown" at the printing presses is both convincing, suspenseful, and...funny.
