Mandarin Mystery, one of the earliest screen appearances of detective Ellery Queen, is a mechanical whodunit with artificial dialogue. Queen is portrayed by Eddie Quillan, who has too weak a presence for the role. Although much of the comic relief doesn't work, the film is partially redeemed by what does.
