Nathaniel Hawthorne's classic novel is done well in this 1940 cinematic adaptation. Sleek, creepy George Sanders plays the Jaffrey Pyncheon role, while Vincent Price -- in a rare change of pace -- plays the goodguy Clifford. Margaret Lindsay plays Hepzibah. The acting is high on dramatic flourishes but remains convincing with a minor exception or two. A gothic atmosphere helps set the mood, and the black and white cinematography serves it well.
