One of the better westerns to come from actor-director team Jimmy Stewart and Anthony Mann. Stewart plays a rough character who does a good job looking out for himself, but isn't much of a philanthropist. When confronted with a corrupt lawman whose tyrannical rule dominates a backwoods town, he saves his own hide and wallet but is unwilling to help the other residents. Walter Brennan plays Stewart's single traveling companion with his usual pleasant demeanor. Good fun.
