This remake of the silent classic affords Bob Hope plenty of latitude for his trademark quips while still playing the haunted house story straight. Both the horror and the comedy are effective, but perhaps only just. The original film is far superior; so is, for that matter, the haunted house film that Hope and Paulette Goddard reunited for a year later, namely The Ghost Breakers.
