Sweet Home Alabama (2002)

Reviews and Comments

Sweet Home Alabama makes no effort to be original: it combines two well understood plot frameworks, the romantic comedy and the "city folk rediscover the country" cliche. These cliches became cliches because when they are done right, they work. But with nothing interesting from a story standpoint to give to the movie, nor anything noteworthy in the visuals or the sets or the soundtrack or the editing, the job of making Sweet Home Alabama worthwhile depends entirely on the cast and characters. It's almost enough, and it may be enough for some. Reese Witherspoon brings a lot of flair to a shallow role, and there is a welcome spirit of humor about the production. Unfortunately, it still feels pretty disposable.
