Reviews and Comments

Tyrone Power made a lot of swashbucklers like this one, generally involving the overthrowing of the rich's oppression against the poor. This is one that is so packed with every trapping of the genre that, even if no one could accuse it of originality, it can't help but please the genre's fans. As if corrupt nobles, slithery villains, childhood injustices, swordplay, and cross-class romance weren't enough, Son of Fury throws in seafaring, lost treasure, sarongs, and a paradise island for good measure. Of course, quantity doesn't make quality, but the film maintains a human center amidst its high adventure, and that makes it work. George Sanders plays a fantastic villain here: smooth, elegant, and deadly.
