One of the most famous and treasured (but not quite the best) of the John Wayne / John Ford collaborations, She Wore a Yellow Ribbon is an exciting story with strong characters and sentiment. Wayne, in one of his meatier roles, plays Captain Brittles, an older Cavalry officer days from retirement. The movie is about a war with the Indians, but it's also about the changing of command from Wayne to a younger Lieutenant who has yet to learn the finer points of leadership. There's a love triangle, wisely played for humor and levity rather than brooding drama, and other less clearly defined moral issues to wrestle with. It's a fine film and stands up admirably today.
