What is frequently considered Joan Crawford's best film, Mildred Pierce is a rewarding melodrama with a noirish atmosphere, a subgenre I hereby dub "soap noir." Crawford draws our sympathy effortlessly and carries us through the couple of manipulative rough spots in the otherwise solid script.
