McCabe & Mrs. Miller is one of director Robert Altman's most treasured early films (overshadowed though it may be by the superior M*A*S*H and Nashville), but I'm not sold on it. Granted, Altman paints a wonderful pair of characters in McCabe (Warren Beatty) and Mrs. Miller (Julie Christie), and few gunfight showdowns are handled with as much style and originality of tone as the one at the end of this movie. But I didn't get the satisfaction that all these and other fine elements come together to form a unified whole, or that there isn't a lot of waste between the better moments. Altman fans should definitely see this movie; although I did like the movie, I would imagine most Altman fans would get better mileage.
