Bill Cosby did not fare well in his first film role, which is surprisingly removed from his signature upbeat comedy. This is a relentlessly dismal film, which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing except that it accomplishes so little in the process. The social commentary here is as "insightful" as blanket color coding; worse, the story plods so arduously that it never has a prayer of getting off the ground.
