"Hi, my name is Bob. I'll be your robber."

The opening moments of L.A. Story set the stage for the bizarre, off-beat humor that will follow. Four cars arrive at an intersection at once, wave each other on, then all crash in the middle. Residents retrieve their morning papers dancing in slow motion in step with each other. Not a whole lot in L.A. Story seems real, and therein lies its heart and humor. This film's world is a bizarre hybrid between a glorious romantic ideal and a surreal Looney Tunes cartoon. Although a stretch toward the end feels like the movie's just killing time, the majority of it is hilarious and uplifting. Much is owed to Steve Martin, who created an sympathetic lead character and wrote the inspired screenplay.

"What I really want to do is direct."
