Reviews and Comments

A minor but effective film noir, Hollow Triumph -- alternatively titled The Scar -- tells the story of a thief on the run from the police and, worse, a brutal casino owner with a grudge. Members of his gang have been tracked down even in hiding in foreign countries, and he's not sure how to escape their notice. He finds an opportunity, however, when he is mistaken for a psychiatrist that looks almost just like him. Gradually, he attempts to assume the man's identity, but, consistent with the genre, bitterly ironic twists -- one downright uncomfortable to watch -- threaten his efforts. The film builds gradually, earning our interest, and does right by our investment in the central character.
