An assorted bunch of strangers find themselves stranded in an abandoned church in the middle of a blizzard. It's an interesting historical document, but it's a pretty terrible movie. The dialogue is hilariously awful, and on top of that it's outrageously dated. The combination of bad and dated is so bizarre that I just had to transcribe some of it. Here's a sample conversation. As you read it, keep in mind that every line is said in a threatening, tough-guy manner.
- "I want you to keep your dirty hands off that girl."
- "Yeah?"
- "Yeah. And I'm thinking that if she needs a nurse, too -- Know what I mean? -- I'm the fella, see?"
- "Mm-hmm."
- "And she's my prisoner. Until I get a receipt for her."
- "Ain't you a fine excuse for a man! Mr. Egan the bull. Mr. Egan'll have his name in the papers, huh?"
- "You lousy hood, you!"
- "He brought back a notorious bandit. Mr. Egan always gets his girl. Say -- ever try bringin' a man back?"
- "Hey, listen. If it wasn't for those two dames, being asleep there, I'd mop the floor up with you so fast you'd--"
- "Mm-hmm. And you're takin' her back for another year in the pen, huh? Mebbe two for jail-breakin'. Mr. Egan the bloodhound. Ain't he proud of himself!"
- "Go ahead, fella. Rub it in. Rub it in good."
- "Just a copper who's stuck on his prisoner, huh? Well listen, boy, there's two of us now."
- "I'll...drill a hole through ya. If you lay your hands on that kid."
- "Well, now mebbe she'll have something to say about that."
- "Maybe she will."
- "Well, now we know where we stand on that, don't we?"
- "Heh heh! I guess we do."
- "And you're a long ways from havin' that kid back in the pen, Mr. Egan."
- "And maybe by the time we get out of here, I'm not so sure that I won't be takin' ya both back. Got that?"
- "Haw haw haw haw haw. Listen, we're just as close to the pen now as we're ever gonna be, do ya get that?"
- "Maybe."
- "And this time I don't mean maybe."
- "Oh."
- "Yeah."
See what I mean? Anyway, Carole Lombard, in an early performance, is pretty good, but the rest of this quaint production is a wash.
