Richard Attenborough's flattering epic biography of pacifist Mahatma Gandhi swept the Academy Awards for 1982 (probably unfairly snubbing E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial in the process). Confidently directed to maximize its dramatic impact, the film is a moving, tragic tale that shows how brutal the world can be, yet inspiring hope just the same. Ben Kingsley's performance is unforgettable, although I found it difficult to get inside his head and relate to him as a person. But perhaps this is intentional -- did I come away from Gandhi looking upon the man as his real-life followers did?
