Reviews and Comments

First Love, an early Deanna Durbin vehicle, is a thoroughly entertaining retelling of the Cinderella tale. What's intriguing is how faithful it is to the staples of the Cinderella story while remaining new and innovative enough to hold one's rapt attention. The movie is set when it was made, in the mid-thirties. Durbin's character has recently graduated from high school and, lacking parents, will go to stay with her aunt and uncle, who live luxuriously rich lives. Her aunt and uncle have a strange relationship but one that seems to work out -- when she's in, he's out, and vice versa. The movie's funniest and most heartwarming scenes involve the uncle, played to perfection by Eugene Pallette.
