A brilliant performance by Orson Welles only partially redeems this interesting telling of the true story of intellectual criminals who kill someone simply because they can and believe they have the right to do so. The story builds competently until the end, when it becomes a soapbox against capital punishment. Regardless of one's views of capital punishment, surely a soppy speech received in a divided courtroom, nary an unrepentant eye to be found, is a clumsy anticlimax.
