A Day In the Life of a Clown (1945)

Reviews and Comments

Jean-Luc Melville's first film, a short about two clowns and how they spend a day of their working lives, doesn't betray any hints about the kind of filmmaking that would make Melville famous. Still, it's an interesting experiment, which shows the clowns mostly in their down time. The best moment has them sitting at an outdoor table of a cafe and drawing inspiration for their acts from the everyday interactions of people on the street. But the film is unfocused and doesn't really feel like it knows what it wants to accomplish.
