NOTE: New York's 'Village Voice' newspaper held its "First Annual Film Critics' Poll" at the conclusion of the 20th century, with contributions from 50 or more distinguished film critics, including Molly Haskell, Jonathan Rosenbaum, Andrew Sarris and others. One of the film poll categories asked the participants to rank their top ten best films of the century, and the results of that poll were published in the January 4, 2000 edition of The Village Voice.

 

* = The Apu Trilogy is comprised of three films (as noted above). The entire trilogy (including "Pather Panchali) is included as fim #55, while "Pather Panchali" is also curiously & redundantly included as film #13 as well.
