The National Film Preservation Board was founded by the Library of Congress (LOC) in 1988. Each year the National Film Preservation Board selects up to 25 films which are considered to be culturally, historically or aesthetically important. Films must be at least 10 years old to be eligible for the registry. Public nominations are also accepted and subject to a March 30th deadline.

Categories &/or genres as included in this list are based on my own opinion and are not necessarily official.

When an individual title is in reality a collection of films (i.e. Rip Van Winkle, Westinghouse Works, Why We Fight, etc.), the title is isolated with expanded descriptions and hyperlinks for each film in the series, each of which are individually checkable.

Three digit prefixes note the year (89=1989, 90=1990, ... , 11=2011) followed by 25 different letters (a through y) to establish a unique prefix code for each of the 25 titles for any given year, and all cumulative titles over the years. For individual titles which are in reality comprised of a series of film titles (i.e. Rip Van Winkle, Westinghouse Works, Why We Fight, etc.), the 3 digit code is expanded to create a unique four (or five) digit code for each of the disaggregated titles in the series (with notes included herein to describe the series).

Lengths of films (primarily using lengths as noted in Daniel Eagan's book) are noted for all films except Narrative Features. Since the latest edition of Eagan's book only includes films up to the 2008 additions, films selected in 2009 and 2010 have times per IMDb.

FOOTNOTES AS INCLUDED FOR TITLES ABOVE

(note #1) Rip Van Winkle = Title is comprised of eight separate 25 second chapters produced in 1896, which are the official NFR titles. IMDb also lists a 1903 version which contains the eight chapters.

(note #2) The Perils of Pauline = A total of 20 episodes/chapters totaling 430 min (3 @ 30 min & 17 @ 20 min) was produced. Only a 9 chapter version created for European audiences is known to exist, and the total length of this version is either 200 min (per Daniel Eagan book), 199 min (per IMDb), or 214 min (per Wikipedia).

(note #3) The Exploits of Elaine = A total of 14 episodes/chapters totaling 270 min (per the Daniel Eagan book) was produced. Chapter 1, 2, 3, & 9 are on Google Videos and are 16 min, 15 min, 19 min & 21 min, respectively.

(note #4) Flash Gordon = A total of 13 episodes totaling either 249 min (per Daniel Eagan book) or 254 min (per IMDb) was produced.

(note #5) President McKinley Inauguration Footage = Two separate shorts selected jointly as a single NFR selection.

(note #6) Westinghouse Works = Title is comprised of 21 short films, although apparently 29 were filmed (thus 8 of the shorts appear to be lost). The 21 existing short films (which I have personally viewed) are available on the internet and total about 69 min in total length, which contradicts the total running time of 53 min as noted within the Daniel Eagan book. IMDb notes an abridged 6 minute version which contains only 3 of the 21 films, which was contained in the 3-disk boxed DVD set called "More Treasures from American Film Archives, 1894-1931" (2004). IMDb describes this abridged title as the '2004 National Film Preservation Foundation print' (with an accompanying link to the IMDb NFR Award page), however other sources (most notably the Eagen book) note that all 21 shorts/53 min comprise the official NFR title.

(note #7) Why We Fight = Seven separate films selected jointly as a single NFR selection.

(note #8) George Stevens World War II Footage = Raw footage filmed by George Stevens during World War II between 1944 and 1946 for the US Army Signal Corps. The raw footage is not currently available for public viewing. Although the five additional titles listed are not NFR titles, they include significant portions of Steven's raw footage.

(note #9) Through Navajo Eyes = Seven separate films selected jointly as a single NFR selection.

(note #10) Dog Star Man = IMDb lists only 'Dog Star Man: Part IV', however the entire five part Dog Star Man series was selected by NFR. I established this with certainty through personal e-mail and phone communications with the film department of the Library of Congress, which notified me that they are working with IMDb and Wikipedia to assure that they update their information.

(note #11) Early Abstractions = Originally contained 10 films titled sequentially from #1 to #10, of which only the seven listed are known to exist. The times for each vary depending on the source you reference (and the times associated with online videos). The times noted are those provided in Eagan's book.
